Testimonials From Former Scribes

Sara Zayed

My name is Sara Zayed, and I'm a senior medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Before medical school, I had the great fortune of working under Dr. Ron Weiss at Ethos Primary Care. I started out learning to scribe, which was its own challenge: synthesizing the patient's story, using medical terminology, and coming up with a concise assessment. As I got more proficient at scribing, Dr. Weiss gave me more responsibility. Eventually, I functioned as his assistant, interviewing patients myself and participating in constructing a care plan. Even after years of medical training I still consider my time as his assistant one of the best learning experiences I've had. It certainly gave me a leg up when I entered my clinical years - during my first week of clerkships, my senior resident complimented my note-writing style, a credit to Dr. Weiss.

My time at Ethos also helped me get into medical school. No medical practice is as unique as Ethos: whenever I arrived at the farm, the farm dog would rush to my car door to greet me. The morning air was always sweet-smelling, musical with birdsong. The best part was that patients got better. These experiences gave me purpose and meaning and helped me craft a medical school application that was inspired by Ethos' vision of healing. I still tell colleagues and mentors about my time at Ethos, and I'm sure nothing else will compare. You have everything to gain by training

Danielle Collins

My name is Danielle Collins, and my interest in nutrition was sparked in childhood when my family went to a holistic-minded physician. It was incredible to experience first-hand how getting to the root cause of illness is a powerful approach to healing. After falling in love with freshman biology in high school, I realized that medicine would be my future. I attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning degrees in biology and nutrition. After discovering the lifestyle medicine world, which deeply resonated with me, I was thrilled to be granted the opportunity to work as a medical scribe at Ethos Primary Care.

I have been working at Ethos for over two years, and it has been an absolute privilege. Ethos fosters a community that is warm and welcoming. While there is an endless amount of wonderful things to say about the practice and my coworkers, I wish to highlight a few aspects of my experience that will be invaluable to my future career.

Dr. Weiss invested a tremendous amount of time and energy in teaching me to become a scribe. During my training period, he stayed late to thoroughly review patient charts together which has given me the foundation and skills necessary to be successful in my position. He wants his scribes to have a lot of patient contact and leave Ethos well-prepared to handle clinical work and think like a physician.

As a primary care practice, we see a variety of patients, exposing me to a breadth of medical topics, age groups, and cultural backgrounds. This has personally expanded and enriched my learning. Also, we have ample time to work with patients and help them come off medications wherever possible which is incredibly rewarding. I am so excited to continue my scribe journey and will begin my next phase by applying to medical schools this coming cycle.

Keith Grega

My name is Keith Grega, and I was extremely fortunate to find Ethos Primary Care after graduating from Bucknell University, with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. My interest in medicine was sparked by my mother, Dr. Meagan Grega, who is a primary care physician in Lehigh Valley, PA. Throughout my entire life she has been one of my role models and has helped teach me the connection between food as medicine and longevity.

After graduating from Bucknell, I wanted to find a medical opportunity that aligned with my passion of becoming a primary care physician, which is how I found Ethos Primary Care. I have been working at Ethos since June 2021 as a medical scribe and administrative assistant. A fun analogy I like to use when describing my job at Ethos is that Ethos has taught me how to run a primary care practice like how to run a restaurant. I work both as a “Front of House” and “Back of House” staff member. My “Front of House” duties incorporate all the administrative responsibilities I undertake including scheduling patients, answering patient messages/phone calls, taking payment, and leading a team of 2-3 administrative staff members. My “Back of House” duties incorporate all my medical scribe responsibilities, which include prepping charts, taking vital signs, speaking with patients, ordering labs, and writing in an electronic health record. This experience will serve me well if I ever plan to open my own primary care practice one day.

My experience at Ethos has been invaluable. Ever since I started, Dr. Weiss took the time to teach me about the fundamentals of primary care and I don’t believe I would have received that type of experience anywhere else as a medical scribe. When I first started scribing, Dr. Weiss would stay late at the office or wake up early with me the next morning to review the charts and teach me how I could improve in my writing. Now looking back one year later, I can run most of the medical visit with the assistance of Dr. Weiss when necessary.

If you are also interested in research opportunities, Ethos is a great hub to conduct clinical research. When you work at Ethos, you see firsthand how patients’ health improves due to their lifestyle programs even when you take them off their medications! Previous medical students who rotated at Ethos during their time at Rutgers University and I wanted to highlight this impact on our patients and in November 2022 we presented at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Conference in Orlando, Florida and are planning to write a manuscript this upcoming spring.

The opportunities at Ethos are endless; and if you are a hardworking, driven, and open-minded individual who is looking to go into the medical field, you would be a great asset to Ethos.
